Is God Wholly Everywhere While Nothing Contains Him Wholly?

Food For Thought from St. Augustine’s Confessions

“And how shall I call upon my God, my God and Lord, since, when I call for Him, I shall be calling Him to myself? And what room is there within me, whither my God can come into me? Whither can God come into me, God who made heaven and earth? Is there, indeed, O Lord My God, aught in me that can contain Thee?”

“…Art Thou wholly every where, while nothing contains Thee wholly?”

Here the good ol’ saint is pondering the greatness of God and the possibility that God could “be” inside of him, or even contained in the heaven and the earth. He is thinking out loud, I think. Kind of philosophizing to himself about the mystery of God. In another passage he asks if God fills all things does each thing have a part of God, or is God wholly in each thing?

Subject to None, Servant and Subject of All

The Return of RussHutto.com

This post marks my “return to blogging.” Oh I’ve been keeping up with my #SundaySetlists posts whenever I lead worship so there’s been new content here monthly, but the last few months have been pretty crazy and hectic.

iBooks

A few nights ago I found “iBooks” on my iPhone. It’s a neat little app that has tons of reading material that you can buy and there’s even a LARGE section of books that are downloadable for free! Score!

I immediately started downloading as many “classics” as I could.

So that brings me to this post. I’ve decided to read through as many Church/Christian/Founding Fathers’ letters and books as possible at my own pace.

I started with Martin Luther’s Concerning Christian Liberty and The Confessions of St. Augustine.

Sunday Setlist – October 3, 2010

1) My Savior Lives (New Life Worship): Key B. Walk-in song. This is a high energy upbeat song that I tend to default to when I need something to kick things off. Since it’s a “walk-in” song not many people are “connected” to what’s going on, but as the song builds people start clicking in! Good stuff.

2) Better Is One Day (Redman): Key D. We did this one a little uptempo. Kind of a pulsing, driving rock feel. I’ve always loved this song so I enjoy when I get to lead it. The ladies led out on this one (which was why it was in the key of D!).

3) Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone): Key D. One of our guys led out on this one. Always goes over well.

4) Here I Am To Worship (Hughes): Key D. I typically play this in E, but just flowed right into it from the previous song so I stayed in D. I guess we could have modulated, but didn’t really need to.

5) You Said (Hillsong/Rita Springer Arr.): Key E. Heather B. Led out on this one and did a great job with some bgvs by Todd H. Great job on this one to end the service.

One of the fun things to work through this week was different arrangements. We had established arrangements vs. my newer arrangements. I’m a newer WL at SSCC and I try to stay within the boudaries of established arrangements so as not to explode the heads of our musicians, BUT I do like to challenge them and to freshen some of the arrangements up as well. Especially, if it’s a song that hasn’t been done in a while. Here I Am To Worship and Better is One Day fit that category. And the musicians enjoyed the re-freshed versions! Not that I did anything crazy with the arrangements, but it’s fun sometimes to add a little flavor in!

My beautiful wife, Lydia, sang with us this morning. It was her first time on stage in the adult service. She did awesome!

Thanks to Fred McKinnon for giving me the opportunity to lead this week while he was away at Forge Con.

Sunday Setlist [08-29-10]

Had a great time at St. Simons Community Church yesterday.

Got to lead the rehearsal and set “officially” for the first time. Thanks, Fred!

I’ve been immersing myself in the song Overcome for the last few weeks, then got Jeremy Camp’s album and his version is just…wow. So, I definitely wanted to include that in our setlist this week. It went over very well. The band and vocals were solid! Thanks to Jay Sellers, Shannon Hutchison, Chris Moncus, Fred McKinnon, Brent Barbee, Cathy Blankman and Katie Fendig for making it a great “first time” leading there at SSCC.

1) My Savior Lives (New Life Worship): Key of B. Very standard upbeat rockin’ arrangement for our walk-in. I think the high energy just really set the mood for the “intensity” of the whole set. Great song.

2) Beautiful One (Hughes): Key D. Brent led out vocally on this one. We did the rocked up version of this one. It ended up being faster live than we rehearsed it, but it totally worked. Very cool!

3) Overcome (Egan): Key of A. Bamm! This song is just…like I said earlier…wow. Homerun. I think you could do it in any style you wanted and it would come out right. We rocked it up a little. I just love the bridge. GREAT song!

Fred talks a little bit about the moment over at his blog.

4) Holy & Anointed One (Barnett): Key of A. This is an oldie but goodie. We kind of mashed up the MercyMe acoustic version with the Sonic Flood version. Jay played some sweet ebo lead on it and Fred laid in some nice piano work. It’s just such a sweet, simple song. I love singing the name of Jesus.

Sermon.

5) Doxology (traditional): Key of G. Fred led out on this one. I’m not really a traditional guy and would have probably ruined the lyrics! That being said, I like to spread around lead vocals anyways!

6) Blessed Be Your Name (redman): Key of G. Does this song ever NOT work? We do it in G so that I can feature a female lead. Katie rocked it. This song just always get such great participation. I love it.

Another great Sunday worshiping the ONE who is worthy! How was your Sunday?

Recurring Dreams: Are They Some Form of Sign?

So, I have this recurring dream about being a senior in high school. It varies (location, school, friends, etc). But it’s basically the same theme: I have to GO BACK to HS at my current age and finish it up to move on to the next phase in life.

Last night’s was interesting as I actually went back to the high school in Titusville, Fl that I spent about a year and a half when I was a freshmen and junior at. Interesting story, I went to four different high schools throughout my high school career and this one I was actually enrolled at two different times.

I’m guessing these dreams might have something do with my buried desire to actually finish up my college degree. I was VERY close to snagging my degree when I decided to go into full-time ministry. I’m not exactly sure how my credit hours would stack up now, but I’m pretty sure it’s in the ONE SEMESTER TO FINISH range.

Wonder if it’s a sign to get back on the horse? Do you have any recurring dreams?
