Behind the Scenes Success May Be Better Than In Your Face Glory!

I got this comment on one of my Sunday Setlists posts this weekend. It’s from a good friend of mine and one of my former students from my youth pastor days. I spent a lot of time pouring into the lives of those kids. We had a great core group of kids that were musically talented and I felt it was part of my “calling” to help develop them into leaders.

I just started “officially” leading worship at JCF:) I’m pretty excited about it. A lot has changed since the “good ol” days, but our family (wife and kids) has really found JCF to be an awesome church with alot of awesome people!

The thing that I’m probably the most excited about is the chance to train up the young talent that is currently at JCF. I know that you played a huge role in my becoming the musician and worship leader that I am today, and I’m excited to pass on that awesome legacy!

Jason has been leading worship for years now, but it’s an amazing thing to see the “calling” being paid forward. It makes sense. We don’t train up people so they can be superstars, we train them up so they can continue to pass on the legacy of God’s work. I’m blessed to have played a small part in that!

I’ll probably never get a ton of recognition for who and what Jason becomes (and that’s okay!) but what makes me proud is that he GETS IT. It’s not about the glory of “doing” the work of God, it’s about being useful and sometimes “behind the scenes” while watching others shine for God!

Proud of you Jason!

I’ll be co-leading at St. Simons Community Church today! Excited to be sharing the leadership duties with Fred McKinnon and Katie Fendig.

Here’s our lineup:

1) Hosanna (Baloche): Key G. Fred will be leading this one. It’s a great tune!

2) Better Is One Day (Redman): Key D. Katie will be leading out on this amped up version. One of my favorite songs from the early Passion stuff!

3) Rain Down (Crowder): Key G. One that I’m just learning. Fred will be leading out on this one. I really like this one! I’m singing some high tenor on it!

4) Our God (Tonlim): Key G. One that I introduced in the adult gathering a few months ago. It’s a good one!

5) Hosanna (Fraser): Key E. Katie will be leading out on this one! It’s one of my favorite Hillsong joints!

How Killing Myself with Burpees is Saving My Life

russ-tire

Ok, dramatic title I know. But I thought that worked a little better than Fitness Friday.

As always, I’m not an expert. Just a rational thinking individual. Find someone you know and trust to talk to about health, fitness and nutrition.

So, those of you who have been following me know that I’m really INTRIGUED by fitness and nutrition. So much so that I’m interested in taking a few night classes this summer (microbiology anyone?) to see if that’s a path I’d like to go in on the next phase of my life journey.

I’ve been training hard and eating pretty clean for the last 8 months or so and have seen GREAT health benefits. My goal isn’t weight loss, though I’ve lost about 30 pounds. My goal isn’t to get all buff, even though I’ve packed on some lean muscle mass in the process.

My goal is optimal health. I workout and train so that I’ll live longer and live a life filled with QUALITY!

My weapon of choice when it comes to working out is CrossFit. Currently I’m on a 3 day per week schedule. My wife joins me and we have a great time “killing ourselves” with good hard work. To be honest, though, it’s not at all killing ourselves, as much as it is pushing ourselves to the limit physically and mentally.

So, what is a burpee? It’s probably the most loved/hated movement in all of body weight exercise-dom. You squat down to your hands and jump your feet back to the push-up position. Touch your chest/stomach to the ground. Then jump your feet back up to your hands. Then complete the move by jumping straight up off the ground with a hand clap to ice the cake. Today’s workout at CrossFit Brunswick is ONE HUNDRED BURPEES for time.

If that’s not a challenge, I don’t know what is!

Since, we’ve been CrossFitting and eating a more natural, whole primal diet our health has improved. Quality of sleep has improved. My energy levels are through the roof. My libido is increased (can’t speak for my wife though!). My blood sugar issues have improved. My blood pressure is normal. All quality improvements.

What are YOU doing to improve the quality of your life physically and nutritionally?

Yesterday was a great day at New LIfe in Richmond Hill, GA. Always enjoy worshiping with those fine folks and my friend Ryan Ogden.

My wife Lydia accompanied me and led out on a few of the songs:

1) Beautiful One (Hughes): Key C. An oldie, but an good upbeat opener.

2) Our God (Tomlin): Key G. Went over well last week, so I decided to repeat it this week.

3) Better Is One Day (Redman): Key D. Lydia led out on this one. It seems that this was pretty much a Passion week!

4) We Fall Down (Tomlin): Key C. Lydia led out on this one as well.

5) Holy, Holy, Holy (Heber): Key C. The old hymn.

Was a great day. I came back up at the end of the service to play a little response music and was piddling around on the How He Loves tune because that “thought” worked well with the message. The pastor turned around and asked me to sing so I did. I belted into the He Loves Us tag/chorus part and then after a few rounds of that, the pastor asked me to sing the verse…which I was totally unprepared to do! Anyways, Lydia, ever the constant helper, mouthed the upcoming words to me from the front row…up until the second half of the verse…where it gets a bit wordy. You guessed it! I crashed and burned.

Why? I’m not one of those who has included that song in my regular rotation so I’m not super familiar with the verse words. Add to that the fact that I have a hard time memorizing even my own songs and you’ve got a recipe for lyrical disaster! Thankfully, the lyrics were projected on a screen (I couldn’t see) so the congregation at least had the words in front of them.

All in all a great day!
