[Book Review] A Century Turns: New Fears, New Hopes – America 1988 to 2008 By William Bennett

I’m a student of history. I am always eager to learn more about eras that I didn’t live through. This was actually something new for me though. A Century Turns: New Fears, New Hopes – America 1988 to 2008 By William Bennett is about an era that I lived through. It’s very recent history.

That being said, this was one of the most enlightening books I’ve ever read about the political process. William Bennett approaches his retelling of events from an obvious conservative viewpoint, but it’s not one that takes away from the accuracy of the events.

From Carter to Obama, Bennett recalls events in the past presidential administrations that set the tone for their terms, but also for the nation, and ultimately the world.

I never once felt like this was a partisan or extremely biased opinion driven retelling of history, though, I’d challenge you to read for yourself and determine your own opinions.

Each chapter is approachable and easy to read. I wish there had been more pictures, but the ones included captured the essence of the events in the book well.

I’d especially recommend this book for young people who were born in the late 80s that don’t have an understanding of the Reagan, Bush, Clinton, and W. Bush years.

Sunday Setlist [3.28.10]

1) Say So (Houghton/Gungor): Key D. Really excited to introduce and lead this one this morning! Went over well. There were a lot of smiles!

2) Hosanna (Baloche): Key G. This is a good solid tune. The church seems to connect well with this one.

3) Revelation Song (Riddle): Key C. This song is always full of win. The church seems to respond well to it every time we do it. I use this one when I travel and lead too.

4) Alive Again (Gary Durbin): Gary, a guest worship leader from Melbourne, FL (Bethany Ministries) shared a song he wrote this past week based on this week’s sermon text (Colossians 3). It was a GREAT tune!

5) Take My LIfe (Passion version): Key D. This was a good closing song. This song uses the old hymn text but reworks the tune and adds a chorus. Reminded me a little bit of the old Hosanna sound from the late 80s. Nice tune.

Everything went great this morning. I had a fun time leading Say So. I think as a brand new song that people are totally unfamiliar with it went over well. Definitely a song that brings a little more soul.

[Review] Relentless: A Worship Project

Relentless: A Worship Project

I love this project. From the get go the heart and purpose of this album is to serve others. Six young college songwriters got together and decided to record an album with the proceeds going to raise funds for the Wesley Foundation at Valdosta State University. I love that the aim of this recording is to promote a vibrant ministry and not the individuals who wrote and recorded the songs.

From their Facebook Fan Page: Their journey began with six very different musicians discussing what it would be like to collaborate with each other’s ideas, talents, and personalities to produce a CD. Nearly a year later, after a lot of time and hard work, their efforts have come to fruition in what they have titled “Relentless: A Worship Project.” With varying sounds and subject matter, the CD promises to be relevant to just about any music lover who has a passion for the Lord and for his people.

3 Ways to Add Worship Team Members

One of my “weaknesses” as a Worship Leader is recruiting. I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not the person who wants to go out and get all up in people’s faces trying to persuade them to join the team.

That being said, there are ways to build a team without being a recruit nazi or without constantly feeling like you’re chasing people. Each one of these ways works and can be a great way to add members to your team!

God is Taking Me Back To The Future

I heard a preacher this weekend use the phrase “God wants to take us back to the future.” And it resonated with me so much!

It isn’t a new idea for me as God has really been stirring my heart to dig deep into the what of what I am living for here on earth.
