Sunday Setlist [5.22.11]
Great day leading at St. Simons Community Church. Had my lovely wife, Lydia, joining me along with David (guitar/vocals) & Michele (alto) Dantzler, Gary Share (bass), Fred McKinnon (keys/vocals), and Mike Richardson (drums) filling out an awesome band lineup!
1) Revelation Song (Riddle): Walk-in Song. Key C. I was ablte to bring an arrangement to SSCC that I had done back at House of Joy in Valdosta. It was neat to hear some of the comments from different people and to see the different perspectives represented. I know it can be quite a gamble to “remix” such a familiar song like we did. Overall, as the walk-in song I think it was the perfect place to introduce the arrangement because people are still coming in and it’s not the main focal point. But you could tell, in both services, that people were itching to stand up and join in and sing, what I believe is one of many people’s favorite songs.
2) Beautiful One (Hughes): Key C. Pretty straightforward arrangement. I love adding the “my soul, my soul must sing” tag at the end. Wraps it up nicely!
3) Better Is One Day (Redman): Key D. I don’t think I’ll ever be “done” with this song. It’s so simple, yet such a profound and wonderful truth to sing! We arranged it a little more rock and roll and hit a nice groove in the bridge that kind of lets the song soar some. If you’ve never done this song, you should look into it and if you’ve been one of those who has done it before but it’s been a long time…I recommend taking it out every once in a while! It’s a great congregational “singer” kind of a song!
4) Overcome (Egan): Key G. Pretty straightforward. We ended our worship set with this one this morning and it is always a very powerful song. I think it can be arranged almost any way you like it, from more of a really powerful, slow worship ballad, to a little bit more of a rocked out moderate driving kind of a vibe…it just seems to work any way you arrange it!
Everything went well overall. I felt like I kind of lost a little “power” in my voice near the end of our second service. It’s mainly because I don’t sing as much as I used to when I was on staff and did it regularly.
I also goofed a little bit on the first verse of Overcome because I was intentionally not looking down at the music trying to “engage” the congregation. So, kind of a good and bad thing at the same time. I kind of smile/laughed it off.
