How Killing Myself with Burpees is Saving My Life

russ-tire

Ok, dramatic title I know. But I thought that worked a little better than Fitness Friday.

As always, I’m not an expert. Just a rational thinking individual. Find someone you know and trust to talk to about health, fitness and nutrition.

So, those of you who have been following me know that I’m really INTRIGUED by fitness and nutrition. So much so that I’m interested in taking a few night classes this summer (microbiology anyone?) to see if that’s a path I’d like to go in on the next phase of my life journey.

I’ve been training hard and eating pretty clean for the last 8 months or so and have seen GREAT health benefits. My goal isn’t weight loss, though I’ve lost about 30 pounds. My goal isn’t to get all buff, even though I’ve packed on some lean muscle mass in the process.

My goal is optimal health. I workout and train so that I’ll live longer and live a life filled with QUALITY!

My weapon of choice when it comes to working out is CrossFit. Currently I’m on a 3 day per week schedule. My wife joins me and we have a great time “killing ourselves” with good hard work. To be honest, though, it’s not at all killing ourselves, as much as it is pushing ourselves to the limit physically and mentally.

So, what is a burpee? It’s probably the most loved/hated movement in all of body weight exercise-dom. You squat down to your hands and jump your feet back to the push-up position. Touch your chest/stomach to the ground. Then jump your feet back up to your hands. Then complete the move by jumping straight up off the ground with a hand clap to ice the cake. Today’s workout at CrossFit Brunswick is ONE HUNDRED BURPEES for time.

If that’s not a challenge, I don’t know what is!

Since, we’ve been CrossFitting and eating a more natural, whole primal diet our health has improved. Quality of sleep has improved. My energy levels are through the roof. My libido is increased (can’t speak for my wife though!). My blood sugar issues have improved. My blood pressure is normal. All quality improvements.

What are YOU doing to improve the quality of your life physically and nutritionally?

500th post + Goals for the New Year

This post marks 500! yay! Happy 500 post day!

I haven’t been blogging here regularly as I keep a consistent writing schedule going on The Worship Community and over on my health and fitness blogs. RH.com has kind of taken a back seat. But I try to share about the times I lead worship or when I participate in some musical event and such.

I am excited about a great new opportunity that will unveil itself in the very near future! Keep your eyes and ears open for some neat musical things coming from this part of the world!

In 2011, I’d like to write 50 songs. I attempted that feat back in 09 and made it to about 30. Great accomplishment back then, but I’m going to knock it out of the park this time. That’s 2 songs a week. Who’s with me?

I’ll Be Working Out For A Good Cause!

That’s right, come September 25, 2010 I’ll be joining with thousands of individuals and CrossFit affiliates from all over the world to raise money for Livestrong, The Wounded Warrior Project and The CrossFit Foundation. We’ll be holding our event at CrossFit Brunswick – the affiliate where I work out daily.

Here’s how it works:

For every rep that I do during this workout called FIGHT GONE BAD, I’ll be raising money for these charities.

In this workout you move from each of five stations after a minute. This is a five-minute round from which a one-minute break is allowed before repeating. The event is in the 3 round format and takes 17 minutes to complete (including the rests after the first and second rounds). The stations are:

  • Wall-ball: 20 pound ball, 10 ft target. (Reps)
  • Sumo deadlift high-pull: 75 pounds (Reps)
  • Box Jump: 20″ box (Reps)
  • Push-press: 75 pounds (Reps)
  • Row: calories (Calories)

The clock does not reset or stop between exercises. On call of “rotate,” the athlete/s must move to next station immediately for good score. One point is given for each rep, except on the rower where each calorie is one point.

The last time I did this workout I got 154 reps. I plan on bettering that next month.

If you’d like to donate you can give a one time amount or you can pledge a small amount per rep. A dime per rep would be about $15. A quarter would be about $37 dollars. And a dollar would be about $150. That is, of course, unless I get superhuman powers and do 400 reps.

Realistically I’m shooting for about 165-175 reps.

Each contestant will have a personal “rep” counter and judge to make sure that all reps are performed correctly and counted accurately.

Please visit my individual donation page here if you’d like to donate now! Shoot me an email through my contact page if you’d like to pledge a per rep amount!

My Health/Fitness Journey Continues

I’ve not let up in my pursuit of a healthier and more fit body and mind. I haven’t posted in a while about it, but I’ve definitely been making strides.

Instead of clogging up the airwaves here on RussHutto.com with a bunch of stuff about nutrition and exercise, I’ve been keeping a posterous log that covers my food and workouts.

I’ve been eating clean and training hard and am seeing good results. Our workout regimen is called CrossFit. You can see what we’re doing here: http://crossfitbrunswick.com. My buddy Keith and I are running the place.

If you’re interested in that kind of stuff and don’t mind keeping it separate from the arts/music/worship leader stuff over here, would you mind giving it a look and a subscribe over at http://rhpaleo.posterous.com.

You can also subscribe to my feed at http://feeds.feedburner.com/rhpaleo

Thanks, do some pull-ups, and have a great day!

Fitness Friday: Turning Off The Lights to Relax

IMG_4446

So today’s Fitness Friday post has more to do with wellness than actual fitness, but in the end I need to be “well” to be able to pursue fitness so it all works out!

I’m one of those people who takes a while to to sleep. I’ll lay in bed for hours sometimes just thinking about stuff. Any stuff. Not just stressful stuff. My brain just keeps on whirring and I can’t slow it down. Call me a thinker. Call me a worrier even.

Problem is, I’ll wake up the next morning NOT REFRESHED. I feel groggy and I hate waking up (getting out of bed and getting going). The problem with that is if I roll over and go back to sleep I only compound matters. I sleep TOO much and it keeps me awake the following night.
