Sunday Setlist [7.24.11]

Had a chance to worship with the fine folks at Providence Worshiping Arts Center in Jesup again today. It’s always such a great time there!

1) Here For You (Passion): Key B. One of my new favorites this year. It’s so simple, yet such a powerful call to worship. I love opening up worship sets with this one. It immediately sets the tone for the rest of the set. I capo 4 and play in G.

2) Our God (Tomlin): Key G. This is one that seems to be getting a little stale for me personally, but I continually remind myself that it’s not about how it is or isn’t for me, but how congregations respond and engage as I do a song. And this is on that pretty much still has plenty of gas left in it! It’s also really singable and very congregational so I love incorporating it into my setlists, even if it’s not my own personal favorite.

3) The Lord Reigns (Original): Key G. This is one I wrote in 2010. I decided to share some originals this trip and I think they went over well. It’s always a little awkward when you’re introducing a newer song (especially if it’s an original that nobody’s ever really heard). That being said, I typically write pretty straight forward and “singable” songs, so I felt like folks were singing along with me fairly quickly.

4) Let The Name of the Lord Be Praised (Original): Key G. I wrote this one probably in 2002 or 2003. I haven’t sung it in ages it seems. Was glad to bring it out and dust it off. I realized it’s actually very catchy and singable. Might have to do something with it here in the near future.

5) Every Creature (Original): Key G. Another one I wrote back around 2003. This one actually grew wings and flew a little bit back in the day. A friend of mine recently told me he was using it in setlists at his place. That made my day! I actually changed it up a little this go-round though.

The previous two songs are in 6/8 and I wanted to medley all three songs. Every Creature is a pretty solid 4/4. However, when practicing I just began to worship with the verses and choruses of Every Creature over the 6/8 groove I was playing from the previous song and it actually fit nicely! So I rocked it in 6/8!! Nice change up!

I actually had a friend who was at the service this morning who remembered the song from way back when and later asked me if I had changed the melody or something because it felt different. I told him, “no I just switched up the groove!” To which he replied, “Ah! I thought something felt a little different!”

I don’t suggest trying to squeeze every song you’ve got into a different time signature, but I had recently heard a version of He Loves Us done in a pretty standard 4/4 and it intrigued me. So, needless to say when I was experimenting with moving a song from 4 to 6 it wasn’t a totally off the wall idea.

6) Praise The Name of Jesus (Hicks): Key G. Ummm. This was pretty cool to just jump right in after every creature…but it was a little too high in G! Haha.

Great set today! As always I’m sharing this setlist along with many others from around the world at The Worship Community!

I had the Honor of being at PWAC this weekend to worship with Russ. It wasn’t planned, I just happened to pick the right week to visit family. I was blessed to hear him lead. As a worship leader sometimes its had to just sit back and worship on a sunday morning, because you are used to being busy and leading etc… but Russ made it easy to enter in.

Having said that, I would like the charts to those songs sometime, (and sound clips if possible) As per our discussion today I think your stuff would be great to introduce back home.

Thanks for posting your setlist. Love the opportunity to preview some of your original songs.

Also…when planning I often find my self getting stuck in one time signature especially when we have a six/eight song. They seem to flow together well.
