What if? [Thoughts on Love]
Ever have one of those nights where you can’t go to sleep because your mind is just teeming with thoughts?
Last night, it seems, was one of those for me. Typically, I’m not a “head hit the pillow start snoring” kind of a guy, so I’m used to my thoughts tucking me in at night, but every now and then I’ll have one of those nights where I wish I could just turn off my brain…solely for the purpose of sleep.
So I was thinking about a lot of things. Mainly, playing out certain events that will never happen in a million years. A fruitless pursuit, but I couldn’t get away from it. So, I got more and more frustrated, and more and more tired in the process.
I had a lot of “What ifs” racing around in my mind, too. So, in honor of a relatively sleepless night (oddly enough I dreamed about that frustrating event that will never happen in a million years) I’m going to ask a bunch of “what ifs” this morning.
What if we looked at love as something we chose to commit to rather than something we fell in and out of?
What if God loved us in the same “way” that we love each other?
What if we taught our children that “love” was nothing like what we see in movies, on tv, or in romance novels?
What if we taught ourselves the very same thing?
What if we committed to love, through thick and thin?
What if “love” wasn’t based on an emotional fix, feelings, or our personal preferences?
What if love was just love and not some narcissistic, habitual, self-gratifying, game that toys with the hearts of others?
What if our love was more than just feeling it or not?
What if love was more than just finding someone like us and hoping they please us the rest of our lives?
What if we pursued love instead of waiting for it to sweep us off our feet?
What if our word was as strong as the grave?
What if we truly committed to love like Christ loved?
What if God was one of us?
Oh, wait He was, and because of it we’re SHOWN love, a greater love than any other love.
Love is not fleeting. Love does not fade.
Love stays. Love always remains.
Love doesn’t rely on emotions. Love chooses to be.
Love is simply love. God is simply Love.
