New Song: God Is Coming Back [Isaiah 40]
This is a new song in progress for the Worship Community’s Songwriting Challenge for April 2010.
My Thoughts:
Arrangement-wise this ended up being kind of a club, soul, smoky jazz kind of a 6/8 groove. I’m tempted to not share this version, but I worked on it for a few hours so I’m sharing!
It could be done in a more typical acoustic guitar driven kind of arrangement.
Anyways, scriptures referenced are Isaiah 40:6-10 (v1, pc1, chorus); John 16:33 and Romans 8:35-36 (v2, pc2); and a very indirect nod towards Revelation 22:20 (chorus).
I thought it was neat while I was searching out Isaiah 40 that several other of these passages came to mind. I wanted to convey the idea that our lives here on earth are brief and filled with struggle, but there is hope in the truth that God is coming back. Hopefully, it’s inherent in the lyrics (and feel) that the idea is that God is coming back FOR US and that it’s what we live for.
I’ve even thought about changing the last chorus through to “Jesus is coming back!”

Lyrics:
(v1)
We are all just like the green grass,
turning to brown grass, fading away
Like flowers we, wither and won’t last,
quickly this life’ll pass, we’re fading away
(prechorus)
But there is a truth,
that’s greater than death,
than life’s fleeting breath
God’s word will never fail,
His word forever stands
(Chorus)
So shout it from the mountain tops, “Our God is coming back!”
Lift your voice and shout it loud, “Our God is coming back!”
(v2)
In this life, there will be troubles,
many more troubles, that we will face
But we live for, a Kingdom that’s greater,
something much greater, than any today
(prechorus 2)
So Come, Lord, come,
Hasten the day,
And we will say
God’s word will never fail,
His word forever stands
(Bridge)
We will wait for You,
We will wait for You
