50 Songs: Nothing But The Blood [Rock/Electronic/Hymn Remix]

So I’ve done it. I think I’ve successfully mashed up a good rock/electronic vibe with some hip hop a la Kanye/Lil Wayne (think autotune) and Adam Lambert (Ya know the falsetto screamer on American Idol). What’s so funny is I ABSOLUTELY hate the autotune sound. But I made myself use it for this. You know the challenge of trying to use something you wouldn’t normally. You’ll have to listen to hear it.

I’ve taken the text and tune from an old Public Domain hymn (Nothing But The Blood) and reworked it a bit.

All in garage band. No fancy mics or anything. And all the guitar work is just me playing my acoustic through GB amp simulators and such.

You’ll either love it or hate it.

Russ – a very precious hymn that I can remember from childhood till present. I remember the words from times past. A great song with a great message – no matter how it is dressed up. Good job!

    Thanks, Papa.

This is one of my favorite hymns as well.

I love the old hymns – but I am learning to like the re-mix as well! :)

I want music that can touch a 65 year old heart Russ, but I first need to concentrate on having a heart that can be touched – that has to come first.

    wow.
    Interesting.
I’m not a fan of the autotuner either…
I will say this: I REALLY like the groove – the feel of the song – and the breakdown verse…
and the drums. I heart drums.

How’d you get that feedback tone bringing it all back in?

The feedback is actual feedback from my acoustic guitar run through an amp simulator really close to the laptop mic. Haha. Pretty rigged, but I got the sound I was looking for!

Yeah. Send a version without drums. I want to put some live drums in it!

Yeah, autotune. Funny thing, I’ve tried to use autotune / vocoder stuff before, for about 10 years, and it never sounds like it’s turned on unless I deliberately sing differently. The first studio engineer I worked with thought something was wrong with his equipment. I tried to put some on Awesomesauce, but it just didn’t sound different to my normal singing…*sigh*

But I pretty much like everything else about this Russ – great rearrangement of a great great hymn. And some of the autotune does actually work quite well too – just might be a bit tooooo much of it – haha.

For some reason I thought of “Video Killed the Radio Star” when the first chorus hit. :-)

Nice! Creative! I don’t know that I’m going to steal this version for use during worship, but I loved it.

Haha, thanks Dean. I don’t necessarily see this as being used in a normal church worship setting, as much as a creative exercise.
