Sunday Setlist Update [5.3.09]
So, I mentioned that we kind of remixed Forever (Tomlin) in this past Sunday Setlist. I wasn’t really sure how to describe it. I said hard/emo/euro/i don’t know…and honestly I don’t know what it sounds like.
The verses and pre-choruses are pretty normal, but the intro (not on this clip) and the ending (on audio clip) are what I’m talking about. You know when the full band hits a rhythm all together. It ended up pretty cool and was a great way to breathe something fresh into this good but “getting stale” song for us. The band loved it. We had some positive feedback from those who heard it. It was just generally fun.
Like I said, I don’t really know exactly what to label this. When I was doing the rock and roll thing back in the early 2000s the kids were calling these “breakdowns” which I never really got, because back in my day when you broke something down it got slower and funkier, not more intense and rhythmic. Anyways so that’s kind of what it is. Take a listen. [Camera placement right by alto monitors so you hear them vocally more than others]
What would YOU call it? Stylistically, that is?

In bluegrass, a breakdown is a fast instrumental, ususally done by a banjo or fiddle. (Foggy Mountain Breakdown) Maybe that’s where it came from.
I’m not real familiar with the basic song (we don’t do it) but I like this!
You know – I don’t hear any emo. I guess because the melody line is so poppy, that it rules the roost. Also, there is no really distorted guitars… So – just because the band came together for some well orchestrated hits, I don’t think you leapt into any new genres. You just changed a nice song and made it more interesting. It reminds me more of arena rock from the late 80′s. So, I’d start off by saying it felt more retro-80′s arena rock.
But it sounds like a blast to play…
To God be the Glory!
@Mike: ooh nice thoughts. I love Bluegrass. A lot of my musical heritage is rooted in bluegrass/country/rockabilly.
@kendall: Definitely, I didn’t mean to imply that we as a band, or even the song was “emo” … just trying to stylistically categorize that last “breakdown”
The only reason I kind of half-landed on emo was because all of this screamo/emo stuff that hit a few years back ALWAYS seems to have some sort of break down like this in it.
We’re also using some FAT distortion in the main mix, you just can’t hear it because the camera is far from the amp AND it’s right next to a vocal monitor.
But I like retro-80′s arena rock. That’s probably the last thing I would have thought of to describe it!!
Thanks for the comment!
I have no idea what to call it, but I like it, especially the vamp on “his love endures forever.” I think any time a familiar song is redone, it forces people to reconnect with it and reexamine what it’s about.
It sounded cool…like you guys were getting “emo”tional about God and having fun
is that emo??? help? >>
,,,and a breakdown is when you don’t make it to the gig on time
Yeah, arena rock – for sure :) V.cool way to breathe fresh life into that song
I never would have thought of the term, but YES! Arena rock! Love the breakdown.
As the drummer, it was a REALLY fun song to play.
That sounds like an insane way to play that song- I love it. The last breakdown was very cool. :)
