Worship Ninjas: How Great Is Our God

Song: How Great is Our God by Chris Tomlin

Worship Ninjas: Mark Thomas (denverintranslation.com); Russ Hutto (russhutto.com)

Vid #1:

Mark breaks down this song and shows how he leads it from acoustic guitar. He mispronounces Russ’ last name since he’s never actually “heard” it pronounced live (only seen in the blogosphere), but after a throwing star contest in which Mark hits a dancing fruitfly at 600 yards, all is forgiven.

Vid #2:

Russ breaks down this song and shows how he accompanies the vocals with simple, straightforward chord shapes. At the throwing star contest he de-cigarettes a smoking camel at 400 yards, but it isn’t quite enough to win his family’s honor back.

    Great stuff Russ!!
Hey, since I’m both blind and learning impaired, a PDF with the guitar tabs would be GREAT! I know they’re in the video, but I wanna print em out :-).
Not critiquing, cuz I’m obviously not at any level to do so, but just a thought!
    Thanks for this!!

@Toby: that’s a great idea, one which I’ve already thought about. I’ll see what Mark thinks. I think because it’s not OUR music, we’d need to be careful about sharing PDFs. Maybe something with just the tab and not the lyrics?

Cool idea guys…love the different perspectives on interpreting the same song. Looking fwd to the next instalment :)

I should learn how to play an instrument shouldn’t I.

@David: Thanks! You don’t play any instrument? Wow! I thought you did!

That would work. I know the words, but usually have to stare at the tabs for an hour before I figure out where to put my fingers :-).

It’s awesome to be a part of this series!
    Great idea, Russ.

I’ll be working on a PDF today (probably) so Russ can link em up soon.

We’ve done this song at least 3-4 different ways…sometimes with the guitar lead, sometime with the piano lead. Sometimes we start off with a drum roll/march and bring the instruments in. Sometimes we play it like CT’s original version, others like his live Austin version. Sometimes it’s a little slower, others a little fast. This is one of those songs that can be done so many different ways and be done well. We always play it in A, and usually mix up lead vocals between alto and low tenor.

one more thought…like others have mentioned, our church jumps right in from the first note. For that reason, we usually like to throw in the very familiar hammer guitar part from CT’s original version so that people can quickly recognize where we’re going.

Great series Russ. I’m looking forward to more. Thanks and kudos to Mark for his addition.

I second the notion of the PDF file of chords and such. Plus—I know I’m being picky—but being able to see your finger placement on your fretboard as you play would help a great deal. I’m always looking for new/different voicings of chords, and though I’ve been playing for a while, I still struggle with my left-hand dexterity.

Completely agree with Mark’s view on the “F” chord.

Thanks again to Russ and Mark!
