I’m Hooked On Photography…And Alligators Are Scary
I don’t own a camera…unless the one on my mobile phone counts. And I’m pretty sure it doesn’t.
However, my friend, Jonathan Chick, of Clarus Photography let me borrow one of his Monday as he broke in a new one.
(edit: The camera is a Canon EOS 20D)
Together we trekked down south to the Okefenokee Swamp in South Georgia. Battling the pre-dawn cold and armed only with a turkey sandwich, granola trail mix, a nectarine, and two cameras we put out in a canoe and explored the swamp. Here’s a few of my favorite photos from the excursion.
Those photos of alligators were taken from very close proximity. In fact, one of the gators could have easily snacked on me if it had chosen to be grumpy. It hissed angrily at our passing. It was thrilling.
You can buy me a camera for my birthday coming up in April. I’m hooked.

these pics are totally awesome!! and I agree Alligators are scary..sooo how close did you get to them brave one? :roll:
Awesome Pictures, Russ!! What kind of camera are you using? I am in the market for a Nikon D60!
@Darla: Thanks! The closest was about 4 feet. Drifting by the floating grass where it was sunning. He hissed! My heart raced!
@Erika: Thanks! I’m using a friend’s camera. It’s a Canon EOS 20D.
Thanks for sharing these pictures Russ. It is lovely to see some of where you come from – yes like a breath of fresh air as you commented on my blog once.
Glad you enjoyed it and I hope to see some more pics on your blog as it will be great to see more of where you live.
@Cee: thanks for the kind words. I think I may have found a new hobby for sure.
And such a lovely day for it too; the light is beautiful. And the alligators look peaceful…so deceptive, just like their crocodile relatives that we have !
@David: indeed it was. I’m still sunburned from Monday. It was pretty cold that morning, so I didn’t even think to take sunblock. But word to the wise: if you’re going to be outdoors and on water for any length of time use sunblock.
Like third row down first pic and fifth row down second pic. Nicely done. Always good for that good old right brain when we exercise it in new ways. ENJOY!
Thanks Louise!
