50 Songs: Every Creature
To help me stay motivated to stick to my commitment to write a song per week, I decided to record and post a song that I wrote over 5 years ago, that remains a favorite in a few congregations around here. I set up the Mac yesterday afternoon and ran an input directly into the mic in from the board in our rehearsal space. No firewire, no ProTools or Logic…just me, the triton, mixer, and GarageBand.
It’s not mixed or mastered or anything, but I enjoyed playing around with some of the sounds.
Granted, my vocals ain’t pretty and I’m sure I could use some female vocals on the harmony parts. But, I actually love the sound I came up with. I’d like to layer in some guitar parts as well.
I wrote this tune in a mountain lodge near Colorado Springs on a songwriting retreat back in 03. It’s one that I know could be tweaked and made “better” lyrically but it caught like wildfire in my home congregation at the time, so I felt it was fine as is.
Typically on the “JESUS” part the guys sing the high Jesus and the gals sing the echo JESUS.
If you’d like to use this song in small groups, worship services, etc. Please feel free to. I just ask that you let me know about it!
Now that I’ve shared something from the past, it’s time to grab the guitar and write something for today!

Awesome stuff Russ!
Thanks, Johnny!
Where can I download a mp3 of this for my iPod – or could you send one to me – I really want to use this on a Sunday – Maggie Cook
Maggie, you should be able to right-click on the link that says “FREE DOWNLOAD – Every Creature [Russ Hutto]” that is below the audio player and above the pdf chart.
Thanks!
Oh, boy, that is what I get for doing things when I am tired – HA – thanks, I am really hearing this song.
Do you have any issue with a female lead, ect? Maggie
#2 – I like the key – we have an awesome drummer and I sent it to him, as well – we definitely want to play around with it, NOT change it per se, but I KNEW he would hear some neat drum moments in there and I am really excited about the vocal line – well, good, once we do it, we will record it on a Sunday and get back to you – we are NOT a large church and our recordings are only okay, but you might enjoy hearing it – Maggie
Sounds great!
love the intro layers…
and your voice reminds me of someone. who? can’t place it.
mandythompson’s last blog post..02.1: Life is What it Is
i found this very easy to sing along with. especially the harmony.
i like, russ!
excited to hear more from you!
tam’s last blog post..you’re a SUPERSTAR!
Mandy: Thanks!
Tam: It really is a good song, has done extremely well in congregational settings.
Forgotten I hadn’t commented on this WAY back when I listened to it first time. Um, 3 weeks ago…
Really love the layers you came up with on this.
I think you went a little overboard on effects on your vocal – it doesn’t sound like it needs quite as much as you’ve got there :)
Would love to hear it with a female backing.
And thanks for the lead sheet :)

@David: Appreciate the comments!
I’m an electronic music fan so I tend to always go overboard on my vocal effects! But I will agree. After listening to it a few hundred times, the vocal is pretty wet.
I need to get it done with a female doing the harmonies. That’s how it is intended to be done, I’m just impatient when it comes to creating stuff. Maybe I should make that as a new resolution. Don’t post stuff until it’s finished! Ha.
I wanted to add in some acoustic guitar and some female vocals…but posted anyways!
Again, thanks for the comments!
This is a great song.
Maggie, I’m not sure I understand our question. Do you mean have we had issues with the range of the song as it relates to a female lead?
or do I personally mind if a female sings lead?
1) If it’s too high bump it down to the key of C and that should take care of the range issue.
2) I would love to hear it lead by a female!
Am I answering the right questions?
