Sunday Setlist [08-29-10]

Had a great time at St. Simons Community Church yesterday.

Got to lead the rehearsal and set “officially” for the first time. Thanks, Fred!

I’ve been immersing myself in the song Overcome for the last few weeks, then got Jeremy Camp’s album and his version is just…wow. So, I definitely wanted to include that in our setlist this week. It went over very well. The band and vocals were solid! Thanks to Jay Sellers, Shannon Hutchison, Chris Moncus, Fred McKinnon, Brent Barbee, Cathy Blankman and Katie Fendig for making it a great “first time” leading there at SSCC.

1) My Savior Lives (New Life Worship): Key of B. Very standard upbeat rockin’ arrangement for our walk-in. I think the high energy just really set the mood for the “intensity” of the whole set. Great song.

2) Beautiful One (Hughes): Key D. Brent led out vocally on this one. We did the rocked up version of this one. It ended up being faster live than we rehearsed it, but it totally worked. Very cool!

3) Overcome (Egan): Key of A. Bamm! This song is just…like I said earlier…wow. Homerun. I think you could do it in any style you wanted and it would come out right. We rocked it up a little. I just love the bridge. GREAT song!

Fred talks a little bit about the moment over at his blog.

4) Holy & Anointed One (Barnett): Key of A. This is an oldie but goodie. We kind of mashed up the MercyMe acoustic version with the Sonic Flood version. Jay played some sweet ebo lead on it and Fred laid in some nice piano work. It’s just such a sweet, simple song. I love singing the name of Jesus.

Sermon.

5) Doxology (traditional): Key of G. Fred led out on this one. I’m not really a traditional guy and would have probably ruined the lyrics! That being said, I like to spread around lead vocals anyways!

6) Blessed Be Your Name (redman): Key of G. Does this song ever NOT work? We do it in G so that I can feature a female lead. Katie rocked it. This song just always get such great participation. I love it.

Another great Sunday worshiping the ONE who is worthy! How was your Sunday?

Recurring Dreams: Are They Some Form of Sign?

So, I have this recurring dream about being a senior in high school. It varies (location, school, friends, etc). But it’s basically the same theme: I have to GO BACK to HS at my current age and finish it up to move on to the next phase in life.

Last night’s was interesting as I actually went back to the high school in Titusville, Fl that I spent about a year and a half when I was a freshmen and junior at. Interesting story, I went to four different high schools throughout my high school career and this one I was actually enrolled at two different times.

I’m guessing these dreams might have something do with my buried desire to actually finish up my college degree. I was VERY close to snagging my degree when I decided to go into full-time ministry. I’m not exactly sure how my credit hours would stack up now, but I’m pretty sure it’s in the ONE SEMESTER TO FINISH range.

Wonder if it’s a sign to get back on the horse? Do you have any recurring dreams?

I’ll Be Working Out For A Good Cause!

That’s right, come September 25, 2010 I’ll be joining with thousands of individuals and CrossFit affiliates from all over the world to raise money for Livestrong, The Wounded Warrior Project and The CrossFit Foundation. We’ll be holding our event at CrossFit Brunswick – the affiliate where I work out daily.

Here’s how it works:

For every rep that I do during this workout called FIGHT GONE BAD, I’ll be raising money for these charities.

In this workout you move from each of five stations after a minute. This is a five-minute round from which a one-minute break is allowed before repeating. The event is in the 3 round format and takes 17 minutes to complete (including the rests after the first and second rounds). The stations are:

  • Wall-ball: 20 pound ball, 10 ft target. (Reps)
  • Sumo deadlift high-pull: 75 pounds (Reps)
  • Box Jump: 20″ box (Reps)
  • Push-press: 75 pounds (Reps)
  • Row: calories (Calories)

The clock does not reset or stop between exercises. On call of “rotate,” the athlete/s must move to next station immediately for good score. One point is given for each rep, except on the rower where each calorie is one point.

The last time I did this workout I got 154 reps. I plan on bettering that next month.

If you’d like to donate you can give a one time amount or you can pledge a small amount per rep. A dime per rep would be about $15. A quarter would be about $37 dollars. And a dollar would be about $150. That is, of course, unless I get superhuman powers and do 400 reps.

Realistically I’m shooting for about 165-175 reps.

Each contestant will have a personal “rep” counter and judge to make sure that all reps are performed correctly and counted accurately.

Please visit my individual donation page here if you’d like to donate now! Shoot me an email through my contact page if you’d like to pledge a per rep amount!

Sunday Setlist: Wednesday Night of Worship Edition [July 28, 2010]

Last night I had the privilege of leading a Night of Worship gathering at New Life Church in Richmond Hill, GA (near Savannah). My wife, Lydia, and I use a small, intimate acoustic set up to lead for about an hour.

This was the first Night of Worship gathering that they had ever had at the church and the pastor (my good friend, Ryan Ogden), said that he really saw it becoming a regular part of their culture. Probably once month or so.

I like that.

Create an environment where people can come and sing and soak. Nice.

So I put together a 12 song set list. Brought my macbookpro to run a few loops on and set sail for a fun time of singing to God.

I decided to just go with my acoustic guitar for the first 8 songs and then brought the loops in at the end when I moved to the piano for the last 4 songs. I medleyed the last 4 songs and it flowed well.

I think people really enjoyed the night and we’ll be heading back in the future to lead worship with them again!

1) Today Is the Day (Brewster): Key A. I hadn’t done this one since leading at HOJ almost a year ago. It was a little rusty but a fun song to sing.
2) Everlasting God (Brown): Key A. I wish I’d had a full band for this one, but nevertheless it ended up flowing well.
3) All Because of Jesus (Fee): Key A. I probably won’t do this one again. It’s TOO catchy. Every time I lead it I find myself singing it for days and says and days afterwards. My wife doesn’t enjoy my constant treatment of this song because I typically sing it in a Mac Powell voice for some reason. Yea-uuuuh!
4) My Savior Lives (New Life Worship): Key A. One of my favorite upbeat songs to lead. It’s just a fun song. And the people always latch onto it and sing it out loud!

5) All We Want Is You (Evans): Key E. I just love this song. It’s now and “older” song, but it has such a great congregational chorus to sing along with it. I could hear the people singing it out. The verses are a little wordy and tricky, but if you just have one person sing them and have everyone else come in at the chorus this song has a lot of great contrast to it.
6) Blessed Be Your Name (Redman): Key A. What’s not to love about this one?
7) The Lord Reigns (Psalm 93)(Hutto Original): Key G. Fun to lead an original. This song has a pretty catchy prechorus and chorus, so it wasn’t long before people were belting it out along with us.
8) Follow After You (Psalm 63) (Hutto Original): Key G. We cut this one and moved right into the piano driven set.

9) Every Creature (Hutto Original): Key E. I wrote this one back in 03 and it seems to be a favorite wherever I introduce it. I usually spend a moment teaching the chorus (it’s a split male/female echo) part. It always goes over well.
10) Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus (Oldie): Key E. I just used the chorus of this one. We had just gotten finished singing “Jesus” as the chorus of the song before so I wanted to concrete the notion of putting our focus on JESUS as we wen through this medley.
11) Open The Eyes of My Heart (Baloche): Key E. Oldie but goodie. We snag through the verse part twice. Again concreting the focus on Jesus aspect of the last part of the night.
12) Holy & Anointed One (Barnett): Key E. Another “Jesus” song. I loved it. It was a great way to end the night. We sang through this song a few times and then ended with the “Jesus” line over and over.

It was a great night. I think people really enjoyed having a gathering set aside just for worship through song and music. I always enjoy leading these types of gatherings.

I felt a little rusty in a few areas (mostly the faster songs), but was really encouraged by the great response we had. Lydia did a great job of singing the harmonies she knew and just worshiping her heart out during the parts she didn’t know. I love that about her. She might not know a harmony on a song, so she just backs off the mic a little and goes to town worshiping! She is truly a great worship leader!

My Health/Fitness Journey Continues

I’ve not let up in my pursuit of a healthier and more fit body and mind. I haven’t posted in a while about it, but I’ve definitely been making strides.

Instead of clogging up the airwaves here on RussHutto.com with a bunch of stuff about nutrition and exercise, I’ve been keeping a posterous log that covers my food and workouts.

I’ve been eating clean and training hard and am seeing good results. Our workout regimen is called CrossFit. You can see what we’re doing here: http://crossfitbrunswick.com. My buddy Keith and I are running the place.

If you’re interested in that kind of stuff and don’t mind keeping it separate from the arts/music/worship leader stuff over here, would you mind giving it a look and a subscribe over at http://rhpaleo.posterous.com.

You can also subscribe to my feed at http://feeds.feedburner.com/rhpaleo

Thanks, do some pull-ups, and have a great day!
